UV are the UK's 1st 12tone band. This is a new genre coming out of London. It is a dance music that draws its inspiration from new and old rhythms, destroying the boundaries between 'urban', 'rock' and 'jazz' music.

LONDON LUCUMI CHOIR

Chant & percussion (UK)

The London Lucumi Choir was formed in 2006 by Martha Galarraga, Daniela Rosselson and Dave Pattman after many years of running voice workshops dedicated to singing songs for the Orishas (Yoruba deities). The choir is accompanied by traditional Bata Drums and other Afro-Cuban percussions, and recently opened for Eliades Ochoa at the Barbican.

TAARA

West-African Fusion (Senegal)

Seyni Diop was born in Dakar into a large family of artists and musicians. He started playing the bass and guitar at the age of 14 with his father Bello and brother-in-law Etu Dieng. Taara began as a group of friends playing music together  but soon gained recognition with their acoustic afro-jazz fusion with flavours of the traditional music of Senegal.

ZAWOSE

Atmospheric songs (Tanzania)

Hukwe Zawose’s success began in the 70’s when he left his village to become the President of Tanzania’s official musician and from there built his musical career, travelling abroad to showcase the unique music of the Wagogo tribes.Signed to Peter Gabriel’s label, the Zawoses recorded several albums and the family expanded greatly (Hukwe had 7 wives and over 40 children). He taught them the music of his ancestors. After the death of the patriarch, this East African musical dynasty is battling for survival at the centre of the AIDS crisis decimating Africa...Zawose will perform at Womad as special guests. Do not miss them at Momo!

His music is pure, original blues: his songs are a cry for life, full of pain and hope at the same time, just a mirror of Burundian society these days. He takes traditional rhythms and tunes, rearranges and modernizes the so far little known Burundian cultural heritage. One of the most promising musician in the Burundian music scene.
